So, if i lose an Android device, I can recover it using the Google backup/restore method. Sometimes I plug an old USB drive into the NAS and copy out a backup folder, then leave that drive in my draw at work or even in my glovebox of my car. The Windows or ubuntu workstations are then backed up to the Synology with just a simple share setup.

Since everybody in my house uses android for something or the other, we all have a specific naming convention for gmail accounts and we use the gmail accounts to sync photos from our mobile devices and to backup our mobile devices and we use the free 15GB to manage offsite photos for each person. That solved my photo duplication problems. I then backed everything up to an old hard drive, I still have lying around, just in case.and trusted the software to find duplicates, which it seemed to do very well. There are similar open source tools for duplicate scanning if you are on Linux.
If I recall, I tested the software's ability to find duplicates first, by copying a pile of random things into a test folder and playing with names and file types until I was sure it would do the job. I'm sure i used DupeGuru when I made a mistake and merged a few folders. Learn from me: I recently trashed my photos folder and left the cloud.
